Paint a Pear in acrylics.

Learn how to paint a pear in acrylic paint. Easy step by step painting tutorial to paint pears one stroke at a time.

This is another fruit painting lesson. I have one Pear Painting lesson on this site but it is more basic.

So in painting my box full of fruit I took painting the pear up a notch and am sharing that with you.

Last I showed you how I painted an apple, you can see that here.

Draw a Pear

Draw a basic pear shape. Or you can grab the pear pattern in the Resource Library.

Since the basic color of this pear is yellow I am undercoating with white.

Paint a pear base coat in white

Let that dry.

(in the video at the very end I show you how I paint the leaves first)

While you wait for the undercoat to dry you can check out a full lesson on different leaves over at, How to Paint Leaves. It will open in a new tab so you won’t lose your place here.

I am going to focus on the front pear in this lesson but the full length video has the tutorial for both pears in it.

Supplies:

Plaid Folk Art Multi Surface Paints
Moon Yellow
Daffodil Yellow
Wicker White
Apple Red
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Umber
Goldenrod (optional)
Citrus Green
Thicket
Medium grey (for shadowing shown in video)
Donna Dewberry Flat Brushes

Base paint the pear

I base coat the pear with Daffodil yellow.

Painting pears base coat in yellows

Paint Pear highlights

Tap in some white on the belly of the pear. Since the yellow is still wet it will blend in some.

Dab it in softly and then leave it. Don’t overwork it!

add highlights to painting a pear

Let that dry.

Paint pear shadows

Load the #12 flat brush with glazing medium or a touch of water and side load with a darker yellow.

You can use the Moon Yellow, Goldenrod or Yellow Ochre. I start with the Moon yellow and work my way to some Yellow Ocher.

Stroke the paint loaded side of the brush around the outer edge of the pear.

Shadow along the edge of the pear painting

Using shadows to create shape

Where the pear curves in (just above where my brush is in the photo below) bring the shadow inward.

You create a C with the shadow color and that tricks the eye into thinking the pear has curves.

Painting a pear, bring shadow in towards center in an arc

With the shadow yellow color, create a small smile which is where the stem will start from.

add a small smile to create pear stem base

Still using the #12 flat brush use some glazing medium then side load with Apple Red. Work that into your brush.

Glaze the red along the lower left side of the pear at the bottom. (this is entirely optional, I just like how it gives the pear some spark)

You are most welcome to leave your pear just yellow if you like.

add a touch of a red color to add a shadow on pear

You can add more shadow to the pear stem point too.

Clean your brush and reload with glazing medium and side load with Citrus Green.

Glaze along the right side of the pear in the top area and then down on the bottom area to give it some green shadowing.

paint a touch of green onto the pear

With the#12 flat brush and Burnt Umber use the chisel edge to create a stem. You can use a liner brush if you prefer.

Touch in more white highlights are you see fit.

Using a touch of white with the Burnt Umber add some lighter touches to the stem to give it texture.

Paint a Pear, add the step to complete painting a pear

And there you have painted some beautiful Pears!
